3v3 Tournament Rules
Registration of players, coaches, and roster size:
- All teams must check in at the Tournament Registration Tent ONE HOUR prior to its first game Saturday
- Each team must review their team roster and present, if necessary:
- A MYSA/USYSA membership form for any youth player not previously affiliated
- Any out of state team not in USYSA Region 1 needs a state permission to travel form.
- The registration desk will check all information and keep the roster on file for the duration of the tournament.
- The maximum roster size is six (6) players. No player may play on more than one team. Players may be added at any time to fill an original roster that has less than six players. New players may NOT be substituted for any players on the original roster after the first game has been played. Please note the limit is six (6) players total – not six players per game or six players per day.
Players and Substitutions:
- All substitutions are made “on the fly” from the half-way line at your own risk.
- No stoppage of the game will be made for substitutions. The referee does not need to be notified.
- During active play, the exiting player must leave the field before the substitute may step on.
- Violations are punished by an indirect free kick taken from where the ball was when play was stopped.
- If a team can not field 2 players to start or continue a game, the game will be forfeited in favor of the opposing team.
Goals and goal area:
- The goals are PUGG pop-up goals 3 ft. high by 6 ft. wide.
- The goal area in front of each goal is a semi-circle with a 6 ft. radius. The ball cannot be touched by any player when the ball or the player is in this area or on the line that bounds it.
- If an attacking player touches the ball in the goal area while the player OR the ball is inside the area or on the bounding arc, the opposing team is awarded a goal kick. Note that this eliminates the possibility of scoring a goal.
- If a defending player touches the ball in the goal area while the player OR the ball is inside the area or on the bounding arc, the attacking team is awarded an uncontested free kick from the center line.. This includes the situation where the attacker deliberately plays the ball so that it touches an opponent while the opponent is inside the goal area.
- The goal area IS NOT “off limits”. The ball may pass through it. A player may pass through it.
- When there is contact between a player and the ball while either is in the area, only then is play stopped. Players may run through the goal area but can not touch the ball while they or the ball are in the area.
Start and re-start of the game:
- Each game will start at the middle of the field, with an indirect kick-off. The ball must be played forward.
- After a goal is scored and after half-time, the game will re-start in the middle of the field with an indirect kick.
Ball out of play over touchlines: When the ball goes out of play over the touchlines (side lines), the team awarded possession can take either an indirect kick from the touchline or a throw-in from the spot where the ball crossed the touchline.
Corner kicks: An indirect kick is taken in the corner nearest where the ball went out of play. Opposing players must be 5 yards away from the ball.
Goal kicks:
- An indirect kick is taken from anywhere on the end line.
- The ball must touch the defensive side of the field or a player from either team before going over the center line. If it does not, an indirect kick is awarded to the opposing team at any place along the center line.
- Opposing players must be 5 yards away from the ball.
Offsides:
There is NO offsides.
Fouls and violations:
- All free kicks will be indirect. Under NO circumstances will a direct free kick be awarded to any team (except as a tie breaker in playoff games – see below).
- Opposing players must be 5 yards away from the ball on all free kicks.
Slide tackling is NOT allowed in this tournament. The punishment for slide-tackling varies with age group.
- For U12 and up: If a player slide tackles, he/she will be penalized with a yellow card. If the sliding player makes contact with another player while sliding, the offending player will be sent off (RED card) and will not be allowed to play in the next game. The team that loses the player may substitute with another player (they do not need to play short handed).
- For U8 and U10: The sliding player will be verbally warned but no card issued. An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team.
- Although sliding without attempting a tackle is not a foul, we expect players to stay on their feet.
- All other FIFA rules apply regarding yellow and red cards.

Field and ball size:
Field size is 30 yards by 35 yards; Ball sizes - U8, size #3; U10-U12, size #4; U14 and up, size #5
Length of game:
Two 12 minute halves for a total of 24 minutes. NO half-time break, switch ends and restart play.
Rules for Coed Teams:
There is no co-ed division. Co-ed teams are welcome to register in male or female divisions based on the majority of the roster sex (e.g. 4 boys, 2 girls should register in the boys division). Teams with equal male/female players should register in the boys division.
Tie breakers for semi-final and final playoff games ending in a tie after regulation time:
- A 5 minute golden-goal (sudden death) overtime period.
- If still tied, another 5 minute golden-goal overtime period.
If still tied, standing field kicks to goal will be taken from the center of the center circle.
The winner of a coin toss will kick first. The 3 players on the field at the end of the second golden-goal period will each take one kick. The teams will alternate kickers. If the game is still tied, one player at a time from each bench will kick until the tie is broken. If a team runs out of bench players, they will start again with the first kicker and follow the same order as the first time.
Note: All preliminary games and all U8 and U10 games can end in a tie. Playoffs are for U12 and older only.
Standings, points, and playoffs:
Points for preliminary games will be awarded as follows:
- 3 points for a win
- 1 point for a tie or draw
- 0 points for a loss
The maximum amount of goal differential that will count per game will be five (5). For example: Your team wins a game 7-0, the score posted will be 5-0. Only 5 goals will be counted towards the differential for breaking ties in the standings.
Tie breakers for standings before playoffs:
- Head to head competition
- Goal differential (5 goal max per game)
- Goals Allowed
- Goals Scored
Advancing to semi-final and final games:
The top 4 teams in each group will make the playoffs.
- For the semi-finals, 1st place will play 4th place, and 2nd place will play 3rd place.
- The winners will play for the championship and the losers will play a consolation game.
Awards:
- All U8 and U10 teams will receive awards after they finish their last game. Teams should go to the registration tent for the awards’ ceremony.
- For U12 and older, the top 2 teams in each division will receive trophies. Awards in each division will be given after the playoff and consolation games are finished for that division.
- The adult division winners will receive a tourney t-shirt.
Protests:
NO protests are allowed. All results and decisions are final!
Cancellations:
If the tournament is cancelled before any games are played, all entry fees will be refunded. If games have started, pro-rated refunds or discounts on future tournament fees will be given.
IT IS THE COACHES’ RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN ORDER AND FAIR PLAY AMONG THEIR PLAYERS AND THEIR PARENTS. ZERO TOLERANCE RULES WILL APPLY
Tournament officials reserve the right to place a team in the appropriate division, if in their opinion a team has registered in the wrong division. This change may be done at any time during the Tournament. If a team refuses to comply with the Tournament officials’ decision, the team will lose its tournament fee and will not be allowed to play in any other division. All points earned in the original division will be forfeited.
Casts are not allowed no matter how small or how well padded.
